Outside experts and co-counsel
An outsider is not a member with fewer permissions. They are granted named documents on one matter, with an expiry date.
Granting access
Add to the matter → An outsider.
- Pick someone who already holds an outside seat at the firm, or invite a new one by email — the seat and the grant are created together when they accept.
- Tick the documents the grant reaches. A grant is to named documents, never to the matter. At least one is required.
- Set an expiry date. The field will not take a blank.
Work product and privileged documents are never in that list, whatever anyone ticks.
What no grant here reaches
Regardless of which documents you name, an external grant never reaches:
- Work product
- Risk and settlement figures
- Attorney notes
- Client communications
- Fees and billing
- Unreviewed AI output
- Any other matter
The expiry
Access dies on the date whether or not anyone remembers. The lead is reminded seven days out — that reminder is a courtesy; the date is the control.
Revoke this grant ends it early.
What the outsider sees
They do not get the product. They get Shared with you: the matters they have been given documents on, the documents themselves, and when the access ends.
The page says so plainly — you see only what was shared, and only until the access ends — and each matter carries a named documents only badge.
Across the firm
Firm Settings → People has an External access, across every matter panel listing every outstanding grant, how many documents each reaches, and which are expiring. Grants are created from the matter, never from there.
