How CaseWize works

The firm is the container

Everything belongs to a firm: matters, documents, people, retention, billing. You can hold a seat at more than one firm — the workspace switcher at the top of the sidebar moves between them, and nothing is shared across the boundary.

Opening a new firm makes you its owner. Until a bar number is recorded on your account you cannot approve AI output or release anything, whatever your role says.

A matter is the unit of work

A matter — the product also calls it a case — carries an internal number unique to your firm, a court number once one exists, a matter type, a jurisdiction, a phase, and two fields it cannot go active without: a statute deadline and a lead attorney.

Inside a matter, work is split across tabs:

TabWhat lives there
OverviewStrength, open alerts, next actions, recent developments
PartiesWho is involved, and the conflict check they trigger
DocumentsThe case file — everything filed on the matter
AnalysisScores, developments, gaps, contradictions, actions, the memo
ChronologyEvery dated event the documents produced, in order
TasksThe board for this matter
MessagesCase-team threads and the client channel
TeamWho is on the matter, outside grants, ethical walls
ClientWhat has been released, and the client’s accounts
SettingsThe matter’s own fields, status and retention

Two planes of authority

Your firm role decides what you are capable of. Your case assignment decides whether a matter exists for you at all. The effective answer is the intersection, minus any ethical wall — and a wall always wins.

A matter you are not on is not hidden from you in a list. It is absent from the list, the counts and the search alike.

A firm administrator is the clearest illustration: they run the roster and the billing, so they can see that a matter exists and manage who is on it, and they cannot open the file. That is deliberate, and no setting changes it.

The analysis reads the file, not your notes

When a document is filed it is read in the background — the text is extracted with its page numbers intact, so anything the analysis says can be traced to a page. An analysis run then works through the file in stages and writes a new version: a case summary, the legal research, a theory and damages model, a set of scores, a memo, and the developments since last time.

Privileged and work-product documents are excluded from all of it. So are documents that have been withdrawn, and documents recorded on the matter with no file behind them.

Nothing the engine writes is final

Every finding can be approved, rejected, marked incorrect or suppressed. Scores can be overridden with a reason. Chronology rows can be corrected, struck or frozen, and a row you touch stops being the engine’s. Facts you record are handed to every later run.
