The client portal

Client access is a record, not a permission

The portal reads the list of things released to it and nothing else. It never touches a case, a document list or an analysis run, so there is no flag to misconfigure.

An empty released list means an empty portal. That is the whole rule.

A client never appears in a firm-wide user list, a search result or a team picker. They are counted separately from members for exactly that reason.

What a client sees

Shared with you — the documents released on their matter, each with when it was shared, its page count, and whether it is downloadable or view-only, and whether it is watermarked.

Their client channel, if the lead has opened one. See Messaging.

Nothing else on the matter is shown, and the portal says so.

Inviting a client

Client tab → Invite the client.

  • Enter their email address.
  • Invite a delegate the same way. Each person gets their own account — never a shared login.

The invitation names your firm and never the matter. Access has no end date; it ends when the matter closes.

Until somebody accepts, the account shows as invited … awaiting acceptance.

The client portal is a plan capability. On a plan without it, inviting clients and releasing documents to them is unavailable — see Plans and limits.

Who can do this

Inviting the client and releasing to them belong to the lead attorney on that matter. Everyone else sees the ledger and is told that plainly.

The released ledger

The Client tab lists everything released, live and revoked: what it was, who released it, when, during which phase, whether the client was notified, and whether download and watermarking are on.

Four kinds of thing can appear there: a document, a work artifact, a case update, and a client thread.
