Filing documents
Documents → Upload files one or more documents onto the matter. The files go straight to storage from your browser; they do not pass through a form post.
Accepted: PDF, image or Word document, up to 200 MB each — subject to your plan’s own single-file limit.
What the form asks for
For each file:
- Document title — how it reads in the list. Defaults to the filename.
- Type — pleading, email, deposition, medical record, and so on. See Type, origin and dates.
- Origin — where it came from.
- Privileged / Work product — tick now, not later.
A tick here withholds the document from the AI. Privileged and work-product documents are never read by the analysis, never quoted in it, and never leave the firm. You can change this later from the document itself — but the window between filing and reviewing is exactly when it matters.
What happens after you press file
- Each file is fingerprinted in the browser.
- It is uploaded directly to storage.
- It is filed on the matter and appears in the list immediately.
- It is read in the background. Its text becomes searchable and quotable when the read finishes.
Reading runs in the background — keep working. Pages and citations appear as each document finishes. See How documents are read.
If the file is already on the matter
The fingerprint is checked before anything is filed. If the same bytes are already on this matter, you are told which document they were filed as, and filing records where this copy came from rather than adding a second document.
If that same source on that same date is already recorded, there is nothing to add and the product says so.
This is why the document detail sheet has a Where it came from section: one row per arrival. The same file from two custodians is two rows and one stored object.
Documents with no file behind them
A document can exist on a matter with nothing attached — recorded off a privilege log, or still uploading. It shows as Recorded, no file attached. There is nothing to read, so the analysis skips it and it is counted separately under coverage.
Errors you might see
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Not added — empty or over the size limit | The file is 0 bytes, or larger than your plan allows. |
| The upload didn’t finish | A network interruption. Try that file again. |
| That file didn’t match its fingerprint and wasn’t filed | The bytes changed in transit. Nothing was filed. |
| Document storage isn’t configured for this install | An administrator has to set the storage keys. |
| Your plan allows n documents per matter | See Plans and limits. |
