Case settings
The Settings tab edits the matter itself — the same fields the intake collected, after it went live. Everything saves as one change, written against the matter.
Identify the case
Internal number — unique within the firm. Changing it renames the file everywhere it appears.
Court number — filled in the day the suit is filed.
Case title
Classify it
Matter type, jurisdiction, court. Your firm’s own matter types lead the list.
What the matter cannot go without
Statute deadline and lead attorney, both required. The row fails to save without them, whatever the screen does.
The lead field is read-only here for most people: handing a matter over is done from the Team tab, by the outgoing lead or the firm owner, and it carries its own decision about whether the outgoing lead stays on the matter.
When settings will not open
| State | What you see |
|---|---|
| Draft | A draft is edited in the intake wizard, which owns the conflict check and the blockers. Finish it there. |
| Closed | Nothing on a closed matter is editable by any role. Reopening is the firm owner’s. |
| Read-only for you | You can open the file but not change it. Nothing is hidden — it simply will not save. |
| Walled / metadata-only | You administer this matter and cannot read it. |
A legal hold does not close the settings tab. The hold stops deletion, not editing.
