Inside the case file
The case list
Cases shows the matters you are on — and only those. A matter you are screened off is absent from the table, the counts and the search alike, rather than hidden inside them.
Columns: case, phase, status, statute deadline, parties, lead, last activity, and what is waiting on you. Filter by phase across the top. A Hold badge means a legal hold is set and nothing on that matter deletes while it stands.
Above the table, Needs attention collects two things:
- a statute deadline inside 30 days (or already passed),
- no activity on the file for 30 days.
Status and phase at a glance
Status is the matter’s lifecycle: draft, active, on hold, closed, archived.
Phase is where the litigation stands: investigation, discovery, expert reports, mediation, trial.
Both are explained on Phase, status and holds.
The overview tab
The first thing you see when you open a matter.
Case strength — the overall score from the most recent analysis, its version, and whether it moved. If the matter has never been analysed, this panel tells you so and offers to start one.
Open alerts — what the analysis has raised and nobody has acknowledged.
Next actions — recommended actions, most urgent first.
Material developments — what the analysis judged material since last time.
On this matter — open tasks with overdue and due-this-week counts, the document count, and the number of chronology events.
Down the side: the statute deadline with days remaining, the lead attorney, the team size including external grants, the party count, and the conflict-check result.
Phase, retention and hold
The overview also carries the controls for advancing the phase, closing the matter, and setting or lifting a legal hold. See Phase, status and holds.
Walls you may hit
“You can see this matter exists. You cannot open the file.” You have a metadata-only view — the firm-admin position. You can manage the roster; you cannot read the matter.
“You administer this matter. You cannot read it.” The same thing, said on the matter itself. There is no setting that changes it.
“That matter is not available to you.” You are not on it, and for you it does not exist.
Every rule on these pages is enforced when a request is resolved, not when a screen is drawn. Hiding a button is not access control, and a disabled input is not either — a change you are not allowed to make simply will not save.
